  Description Gonadorelin Acetate is another name for gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH). It is a synthetic decapeptide prepared using solid phase peptide synthesis.

  Gonadorelin, also known as GnRH or LHRH, is produced by neuroendocrine cells within the hypothalamus. The hormone is secreted pulsatilely. Gonadorelin induces the release of LH and FSH from the anterior pituitary.

  After a transient increase, continuous administration of gonadorelin results in downregulation of LH and FSH levels followed by a suppression of ovarian and testicular steroid biosynthesis.

  Uses Gonadorelin Acetate is used in various agricultural and biological studies. It was used to study ovulation synchronization in dairy cows.

  Synthetic GnRH (gonadorelin hydrochloride [Factrel]) is marketed for diagnostic purposes to differentiate between pituitary and hypothalamic defects in patients with delayed puberty and hypogonadotropic hypogonadism. After a baseline serum LH is drawn, a single 100-mcg GnRH dose is administered subcutaneously or intravenously. An increase in serum LH of greater than 10 mIU/ml is considered a positive response. Synthetic GnRH (gonadorelin acetate [Lutrepulse]) is marketed for the treatment of infertile women who are anovulatory and have GnRH deficiency. In this protocol, a pump administers GnRH in pulses to promote a physiologic cycle. Because of the complexity of administration, this treatment modality was rarely used, and this product is no longer available in the United States.
